Kapil Dev attacks Saurav Ganguly

Kapil Dev attacks Saurav Ganguly, Laxman, and Gavaskar over Yo-Yo test and makes a controversial statement

The World Cup-winning skipper and former Indian all-rounder Kapil Dev made a controversial statement about the yo-yo test ahead of England tour. He cited that it can't be considered as the sole criteria for selection.

Kapil Dev made a further statement over the VVS Laxman, Sunil Gavaskar and Sourav Ganguly regarding Yo-Yo Test which has become crucial parameter for selection in Indian cricket team.

As repoted in Sportskeeda, the Indian cricketing legend cited that "If a player is match fit, he should be playing and there should not be any other criteria

] "Sunil Gavaskar may not have enjoyed running more than 15 minutes as a part of his fitness drill but he could bat for three days. Even the likes of Anil Kumble, VVS Laxman and Sourav Ganguly may or may not have cleared this version of the Yo-Yo test but they turned out to be some of the best players India has produced.

Further he added that "Even football legend Diego Maradona wasn't the fastest runner but whenever he had the ball, he was the fastest. Similarly, every cricketer has a different way of responding to fitness drill.

"A bowler can perhaps clear the Yo-Yo test easily than a batsman. But this isn't the ultimate test to judge a player. It comes down to your performances on the field and cricketers should be judged only on the basis of their on-field performances," Kapil said.

Anupam Kher dedicates award to struggling actors

IIFA Awards 2018: Anupam Kher dedicates award to struggling actors

bollywood Veterean Anupam Kher with the Outstanding Achievement in Cinema honour at the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) gala, has dedicated the award to strugglers who try and find their feet in the showbiz world without having a godfather.

“Thank you IIFA for honouring me with Outstanding Achievement In Cinema Award. I really feel honoured and energised. Thank you the people of Bangkok for your love, warmth and hospitality. I dedicate this award to all the struggling actors who have to make it without godfathers,” Anupam tweeted on Monday.

The actor received the honour at the 19th edition of the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards gala on Sunday night. While Anupam’s long-time friend and co-actor Anil Kapoor gave an insight into the Saaransh actor’s life and career, the trophy was handed over to him by Viacom18’s Group CEO Sudhanshu Vats.

“Thank you my dearest friend Anil Kapoor for introducing my Outstanding Achievement In Cinema Award at IIFA with so much love, warmth. Selflessness and grace. You are a priceless and a unique friend. Your words moved me,” wrote Anupam.

The 63-year-old actor made his debut in 1984 with Saaransh. Later he became part of many iconic films like Lamhe, Chaalbaaz, Khel, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Daddy and Maine Gandhi Ko Nahi Mara. The actor has also made appearances in many critically acclaimed international films such as Golden Globe-nominated Bend It Like Beckham, Ang Lee’s Golden Lion-winning Lust, Caution and David O. Russel’s Oscar-winning Silver Linings Playbook. He was recently honoured with a BAFTA nomination for his role in the British television sitcom The Boy With The Topknot. Even after doing 500 films in his more three-decade-long career in showbiz, the actor believes it is his second innings in the industry and has no intention to stop just yet.

“It is a great feeling when your own peers celebrate your achievements and as I have been saying, this is just the interval point of what I am doing and my second half of journey starts now. It started with my 500th film. I told myself this is the interval point with The Big Sick and after that, I have done 15 films in the last one year both international and national,” Anupam had said.

Anupam Kher has also been awarded the Padma Shri in 2004 and Padma Bhushan in 2016 for his contribution in the field of cinema and arts.

Missing Messi fan found dead in Kerala:

Why would an average person kill himself just because a celebrity he has only watched on TV loses a game?

During the last couple of weeks, Indian social media cried over suicide of Anthony Bourdain and gossiped about Bhayyuji Maharaj shooting himself.

Their tragic suicides did remind us, yet again, about the inner melancholy of the rich and famous, but as these men were extremely successful celebrities, their stories have little to offer to most of us who are living our mundane normal lives away from the glory and glamour they enjoyed.

Unfortunately, this week we have another suicide story of a man just like you and me that may have something deep for us to learn from, especially if we juxtapose it with suicides of these celebrities.

A thirty year old accountant from Kerala, a fan of Lionel Messi who himself had never played football, left his home to commit suicide after watching Messi-led Argentina lose 3-0 to Croatia on TV.

As his dead body is now discovered, if this story turns out to be true, we have a strange question at hand.

Why would an average person kill himself just because a celebrity he has only watched on TV loses a game?

The first and foremost realisation that hits us hard from this tragedy is about the delusion-creating power of new media like TV and internet. They seem to impersonate reality to such an extent that they have now become a real part of our lives.

The so-called football fever that has gripped India, a nation currently ranked 97 in FIFA rating with no real football-playing culture, is a completely bogus fabrication successfully built by business houses who have turn football-watching into an emotional frenzy only through intense and well-directed media campaigns.

This suicide proved that emotional button-pressing of these media campaigns have the power to forge a completely baseless and yet strong enough emotional delusion that it can even mislead a person into executing such a tragic act of self-destruction.

But, this emotional delusion created by media is not the real cause of this suicide.

More important is the fact that this young man saw such a little value in his existence that he could sacrifice it for such a trivial reason. It is this phenomenon that needs our serious attention, especially because most of us average people are sailing in the same boat.

Today modern media has captured the attention of humanity to such an extent that it has become a real context of human life. As this media thrives on human stories, celebrities and their lives is the main fodder that it feeds on and regurgitates for us to consume.

The net outcome is, our lives look mundane and meaningless compared to the lives of the rich and famous that we see pouring out of media streams that we are constantly immersed into. It is entirely possible that this phenomenon has a strong psychological impact on an average person living a normal life to evaluate his/her own life to be worthless and meaningless compared to that of a celebrity.

The tragic hero of our suicide tale could throw away his life on finding a defeat of his icon emotionally unbearable (while Messi himself will sleep over without too much trouble in next few days) only because, in his mind, his own life was dwarfed into insignificance against that of larger-than-life image of Messi that he had constructed due to being subjected to constant and well-directed media hype around football and Messi.

It is likely that the tragic suicide of this young man from Kerala will be forgotten as an anomaly, but I prefer to take it as a warning about the future where media business will be creating even more hype around celebrity lives.

While they use celebrities knowing fully well that humans are extremely interested in other humans and their lives, this process has a hidden danger of it providing a completely false context to most people like us living average lives.

There could be more people, if not going to the extreme extent of committing suicide, surely finding their own lives colourless and not worth enjoying. It will be a tragic blow for the society if this malaise spreads, as we can end up having a lot of unhappy people for no real reason.

One way of dampening the damaging power of celebrity flood that we are experiencing is to return to the stories of Anthony Bourdain and Bhayyuji Maharaj, as they tell us the real truth about celebrity lives.

They tell us that one may be a great success, even be a Messi, a Ronaldo or a Virat Kohli, life remains the same. Be it an accountant or a Bollywood star, there is always some rain and some sunshine in every life, and going by the celebrity examples that we see, it is entirely possible that being a celebrity may get him/her more rain than an average person like you and me.

If this reality is communicated to people, they can see that their life is just as valuable as that of anyone on this planet and thus not worth throwing away while comparing it with other more successful people they see on TV and internet.

Let us realise that we all are superstars of our lives. Our worth can’t be decided by comparing it with a mostly fake people created by forces of commerce.

In the beginning of this year too, WhatsApp ended support for a range of older smartphone operating systems. Announcing this in a support note on its website, the Facebook-owned company said, “These platforms don't offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app's features in the future. If you use one of these affected mobile devices, we recommend upgrading to a newer iOS version, or to a newer Android running OS...”

So, here’s all you need to know about the devices that will lose WhatsApp support this year as well as a recap of the the phones that WhatsApp has already stopped updates for.

UK excludes India from relaxed student visa rules

UK excludes India from relaxed student visa rules

LONDON: The UK government has caused outrage with its decision to exclude Indian students from a new list of countries considered "low risk" in order to facilitate an easier visa application process to UK universities.

In changes to its immigration policy tabled in Parliament yesterday, the UK Home Office announced a relaxation of the Tier 4 visa category for overseas students from around 25 countries. On a list already covering countries like the US, Canada and New Zealand, the Home Office has added on the likes of China, Bahrain and Serbia as countries from where students would face reduced checks on educational, financial and English language skill requirements to study at British universities. The changes, which come into effect on July 6, aim to make it easier for international students to come to study in the UK.

However, India has been left out of this new expanded list, which means Indian students applying for similar courses will continue to face rigorous checks and documentary requirements. Lord Karan Bilimoria, Indian-origin entrepreneur and President of the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA), described the move as an "insult" to India and another example of Britain's "economically illiterate and hostile attitude to immigration".

"I consider this another kick in the teeth for India ... This sends entirely the wrong message to India, to exclude it from these Tier 4 measures. The government has simply got it wrong," said Bilimoria, while welcoming the overall visa relaxation measures introduced by UK home secretary Sajid Javid.

Bilimoria, the founder of Cobra Beer and founding-chair of UK India Business Council (UKIBC), added, "It is completely hypocritical that this is announced at the same time that Britain is talking about doing a post-Brexit free trade agreement (FTA) with India. If this is the way they treat India, they can dream on about an FTA with India".

"India has always been one of Britain's closest allies and an emerging global economic superpower. Excluding India from this list is myopically short-sighted and is damaging what has always been a special relationship between our countries," he said.

The National Indian Students and Alumni Union (NISAU) UK also expressed disappointment at India's exclusion from the list, which it said effectively categorises Indian students as "high risk". The representative body for Indian students in the UK said it was unfair that Indian students should be treated differently from Chinese or other nationals on the list.

"It is important to note that today's announcement makes no change to the process of application for Indian students, but it is the perception of this message among Indian students that worries us. And, this raises another question - will China continue to get even more favourable actions while India gets the rhetoric," questioned Sanam Arora, president of NISAU UK.

According to latest Office of National Statistics (ONS) data, India is among the top three countries from where overseas students come in to study at UK universities, followed by China and the US. While Indian students registered a hike of 30 per cent to hit 15,171 Tier 4 visas last year, the numbers remain a far cry from around 30,000 six years ago.

The latest development will add to growing concern within Indian government circles, given that ministers and diplomats have repeatedly highlighted the need for a more welcoming immigration regime for Indian students.

Last week, Indian High Commissioner to the UK, YK Sinha, held a meeting with the UK's minister for universities, Sam Gyimah, during which he once again raised the issue of "smoother and greater student and faculty mobility between the two countries".

"It is unfortunate that in the last six years we have seen a steep drop (in Indian student numbers). What should be troubling universities here is that Indian students are now going in much greater numbers to the US, Australia - even France and Germany," Sinha has said in the past.

The UK Home Office said in order to make it easier for students to come and study in the UK's world-leading education sector, it has expanded the list of countries from which students will be able to benefit from a streamlined application process.

"Students from an additional 11 countries, including China, will be able to provide a reduced level of documentation when applying for their Tier 4 visa," the Home Office statement notes.

On being asked why India had been omitted from this expanded list, a spokesperson said, "We welcome Indian students who want to come to the UK to study at our world-leading educational institutions. We issue more visas to students from India than any other country except China and the USA." The Home Office stressed that 90 per cent of Indian students who apply for a UK visa get one, a figure up from 86 per cent in 2014 and 83 per cent the year before that.

It added, "In addition, the proportion of Indian students coming to study in the UK at a university has increased from around 50 per cent in 2010 to around 90 per cent in 2016. Indian student visa applications are up 30 per cent on last year. We continue to have regular discussions with the Indian government on a range of issues including on visas and UK immigration policy," it said.

India proposes to raise customs duty on 30 US products

India proposes to raise customs duty on 30 US products

NEW DELHI: India has now submitted a revised list of 30 items -- including motor cycle, certain iron and steel goods, boric acid and lentils -- to the WTO on which it proposes to raise customs duty by up to 50 per cent. As duties hiked by the US on certain steel and aluminium products would have implications of about $241 million on India, the raise in tariffs proposed by New Delhi too would have an equal implication on America.

"The US would be collecting $241 million worth of duties by hiking tariffs on certain steel and aluminium items from India, we also proposed to withdraw concessions of similar amount from these 30 products imported by India from the US," a source said.

Earlier in May, India proposed to raise duties by up to 100 per cent on 20 products such as almonds, apple and specific motorcycles imported from the US. The additional duty proposed to be hiked on these items ranges from 10 per cent to 100 per cent. "The revision is being provided to adjust the products and the tariff rates in accordance with India's rights reserved vide its notification to the Council for Trade in Goods contained in the WTO document...of May 18, 2018.

"India hereby reiterates its decision to suspend concessions or other obligations notified to the Council for Trade in Goods on May 18, 2018...of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade 1994 and Article 8.2 of the Agreement on Safeguards, that are substantially equivalent to the amount of trade affected by the measures imposed by the United States," according to a communication by India to WTO.

It said that the proposed suspension of concessions or other obligations takes the form of an increase in tariffs on selected products originating in the US, based on the measures of the America. "India reserves its right to further suspend substantially equivalent concessions and other obligations based on the trade impact resulting from the application of the measures of the US," it added.

The country has proposed this move under the WTOs Agreement on Safeguards. On March 9, US President Donald Trump imposed heavy tariffs on imported steel and aluminium items, a move that has sparked fears of a global trade war. Trump signed two proclamations that levied a 25 per cent tariff on steel and a 10 per cent tariff on aluminium imported from all countries except Canada and Mexico.

Earlier India had stated that these suspension will come into effect earlier than June 21, 2018, in case the US decides to continue the period of application of the measures.

It said that the duty imposed by America has affected steel exports by $198.6 million, while the same on aluminium was $42.4 million. The other items include chickpeas, fresh apple, walnut, refined palmolein, motor cycle with engine capacity over 800 cc, diagnostic reagents and threaded nuts.

India has also dragged the US to the World Trade Organisations dispute settlement mechanism over the imposition of import duties on steel and aluminium. India's exports of steel and aluminium products to America stood at about $1.5 billion every year. Its exports to the US in 2016-17 stood at $42.21 billion, while imports were $22.3 billion.

Amazon Fire TV Cube

Amazon Fire TV Cube – an Alexa aimed at the living room

If you have an Amazon speaker then it usually will find itself placed in a kitchen or a bedroom. The Amazon Fire TV Cube is something that is aimed at the living room by allowing interaction with your TV using just your voice. The Fire TV Cube is aimed at interacting with your other entertainment gear and is designed to replace all the remotes that clutter up your table by utilizing Alexa voice commands.

Think of it as a combination between the Fire TV and an Echo Dot. The Cube has all the 4K HDR video and Dolby Atmos audio capabilities of the Fire TV, hands-free Alexa built-in, as well as an HDMI output to feed your TV, and an included Ethernet adapter. The infrared blasters allow the Cube to send signals to your other AV equipment, whether that be a TV, cable box, or even an AV receiver or soundbar. If you’re wondering how the Cube is different from other Alexa devices then you’ll be like every other consumer.

The devices are very similar, except the Cube has infrared control.

That’s what allows it to interact with non-smart devices that aren’t Alexa aware. The infrared is built into the Cube itself as well as a separate included module that can reach equipment that is perhaps in a closed cabinet. Saying “Alexa, turn on the TV” for example will do just that or even “Alexa, let’s party” will cause music to start playing on a sound-bar instead of through the integrated speaker as it would in the case of an Echo Dot for example.

Other commands that work, after you say the “Alexa” keyword:

 “Turn on/off the TV”
“Turn up/down the volume” or “Mute”
“Home” or “Go home” returns to Fire TV home page
“Launch Netflix” or “Launch Hulu” to launch apps
“Play ‘Transparent'” or “Play ‘Sneaky Pete'”
“Show dramas” or “Show recent movies”
“Pause,” “Stop,” “Play,” “Rewind” and “Fast-forward”
“Go down” or “Scroll down” navigates through the page

The Fire TV Cube was originally rumored in September 2017 and officially revealed on Thursday. Amazon says it will ship June 21 and will cost $120 but Prime members can order one now starting at $90.

China slaps tariffs on $50 bn worth of US goods

China slaps tariffs on $50 bn worth of US goods

In a tit-for-tat action, China today imposed additional duties on USD 50 billion worth of American products, a day after US President Donald Trump slapped a stiff 25 percent tariff on Chinese goods worth similar amount, triggering a full-fledged trade war between the world's two largest economies.

Trump yesterday accused China of intellectual property theft and unfair trade practices as he announced 25 percent tariff on USD 50 billion worth of Chinese goods.

The Chinese government has decided to impose additional duties of 25 percent on 659 items of US products worth about USD 50 billion, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

The government also unveiled a list of US products which will be subjected to additional tariffs, it said.

Additional tariffs for 545 items worth about USD 34 billion including agricultural products, vehicles and aquatic products will be effective from July 6, 2018, a statement issued by China's Customs Tariffs commission said.

The implementation date for imposing additional tariffs on the remaining 114 items, covering chemical products, medical equipment and energy products will be announced later, it said.

The decision has been made in line with relevant stipulations of the Foreign Trade Law of China and the Regulations of the People's Republic of China on Import and Export Duties, as well as the fundamental principles of international laws, the statement said.

On Friday, the US announced additional tariffs of 25 percent on Chinese imports worth approximately USD 50 billion.

From July 6, additional tariffs will be levied on some USD 34 billion worth of Chinese products. Meanwhile, the other USD 16 billion worth of Chinese products will undergo further review in a public notice and comment process.

"The US move violates the relevant rules of the World Trade Organization, goes against the consensus already reached in bilateral economic and trade consultations, seriously infringes upon the legitimate rights and interests of the Chinese side and undermines the interests of China and its people," the commission's statement said.

"The Chinese side firmly opposes that," it said.

An official in charge of the Office of the Customs Tariff Commission said that the additional tariffs targeting Chinese goods, once imposed, would "substantially change" the trade conditions of these goods, and affect relevant producers and trade companies as well as the production and operation of the upstream and downstream industries.

The official said the Chinese action was taken in response to the emergent circumstances caused by the US violations of international obligations.

China has noticed the US statement which said Washington would continue to impose additional tariffs if China takes retaliatory measures. China reserves its rights to take corresponding measures, the unnamed official was quoted as saying in the report.

The moves to import tariffs came as the two countries held several rounds of talks following Trump's demand to slash bilateral trade deficit by USD 100 billion in a month followed by USD 200 billion to address the USD 375 billion deficit.

In mid-May, both sides announced a cease-fire after two rounds of trade negotiations. The two sides had said in a joint statement that China would "significantly increase" purchases of US agricultural and energy products to reduce the trade imbalance, a top Trump demand.

Ten days later, the White House abruptly said it would proceed with the tariffs. A further round of trade talks in Beijing earlier this month failed to yield any breakthroughs.

Trump's decision to impose fresh tariffs on China follows his recent imposition of steep tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, Mexico and the European Union on national security grounds.

Vijay Mallya ordered to pay 200,000 pounds to Indian banks

Vijay Mallya ordered to pay 200,000 pounds to Indian banks by UK court

LONDON: The UK High Court has ordered embattled liquor tycoon Vijay Mallya to pay a minimum of 200,000 pounds towards the costs incurred by 13 Indian banks in their legal battle to recover alleged dues.

Last month, Judge Andrew Henshaw had refused to overturn a worldwide order freezing Mallya's assets and upheld an Indian court's ruling that a consortium of 13 Indian banks led by State Bank of India (SBI) were entitled to recover funds amounting to nearly 1.145 billion pounds.

As part of the judgement, the court has also ordered Mallya, 62, to pay costs towards registration of the worldwide freezing order and of the Debt Recovery Tribunal (DRT) of Karnataka's judgement in Britain.

"The court ordered that Mallya pay the banks' costs. The standard order is that the court will assess those costs unless the parties can otherwise agree a figure for what should be paid,? said a legal expert familiar with the case.

The court's assessment of costs is a separate process, which ends with another court hearing before a specialist costs judge in the UK. But in the meantime, Mallya must pay 200,000 pounds towards this legal costs liability.

In a high court ruling dated May 8, Judge Henshaw had refused to overturn a worldwide order freezing Mallya's assets and upheld an Indian court's ruling that the consortium of 13 Indian banks - State Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, Corporation bank, Federal Bank Ltd, IDBI Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, Jammu and Kashmir Bank, Punjab and Sind Bank, Punjab National Bank, State Bank of Mysore, UCO Bank, United Bank of India and JM Financial Asset Reconstruction Co. Pvt Ltd - were entitled to recover funds amounting to nearly 1.145 billion pounds.

The legal costs owed to the banks emerged in a subsequent court order by the same judge.

"The First Defendant's (Mallya) application for permission to appeal is refused. Any further application for permission to appeal should be made to the Court of Appeal to be dealt with by a judge of that court,'' the judgement notes.

Mallya, who is separately also fighting extradition to India on fraud and money laundering charges worth an estimated Rs 9,000 crores, has since filed an appeal notice at the Court of Appeal, which includes an application for permission to appeal.

Permission will only be granted if the court considers that the appeal would have a real prospect of success or there is some other compelling reason for the appeal to be heard.

Meanwhile, Mallya is due back at Westminster Magistrates' Court in London next month for one of the final hearings in his extradition case.

A hearing for closing arguments to be presented by his defence team and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), on behalf of the Indian authorities, was scheduled for July 11 but is now likely to take place on July 31.

The former Kingfisher Airlines boss remains on bail since his arrest on an extradition warrant in April last year. The CPS believes it has successfully established a prima facie case of fraud against the businessman and that there are no bars to his extradition to face the courts in India.

Mallya's lawyers have claimed the criminal charges against their client are ''without substance'' and ''politically motivated''. They have also challenged the case on human rights grounds, questioning the conditions at Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai, where the businessman is to be held post-extradition

Elite Gurkhas Deployed to secure Trump-Kim summit

Elite Gurkhas from Nepal deployed to secure Trump-Kim summit

SINGAPORE, JUNE 11 To protect one of the highest-profile diplomatic events so far this century, Singapore has enlisted the help of its fearsome Nepalese fighters whose large curved knives, according to custom, must “taste blood” whenever they’re drawn.

Wearing brown berets and equipped with body armour and assault rifles, the elite Gurkha police officers are a conspicuous part of the enveloping security force Singapore has deployed for tomorrow’s summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The meeting, which could prove to be a crucial moment in the global diplomatic push to resolve the nuclear stand-off with Pyongyang, has sent the highly manicured city-state into security overdrive.

Trump and Kim have brought their own personal security personnel and heavily armoured limousines; Kim’s bodyguards have been seen running in formation alongside his massive Mercedes.

Selected among young men from impoverished Nepal, Gurkhas have been part of Singapore’s police force since 1949. There are reportedly about 1,800 Gurkha officers in Singapore, and they are a regular presence at high-security events. Today, they were seen standing guard at the heavily fortified St Regis Singapore, where Kim arrived yesterday afternoon.

“This is a moment of pride to see the Gurkhas responsible for guarding such an important event,” said Krishna Kumar Ale, who served for 37 years in the British army before retiring back home in Nepal. “It shows that we Gurkhas have reached a point where we are trusted with the security of two of the most important people in the world.”

In 2015, during the Shangri-la Dialogue, a Singapore summit that includes defence ministers and top security officials from around the world, a Gurkha officer shot and killed a driver after his car breached a series of roadblocks outside the summit’s venue. The incident turned out to be drug-related, not an attack.

When asked about the scale of security operations for the summit, Singapore’s Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam said yesterday that more than 5,000 police had been deployed. The Gurkha Contingent is a special police unit inside the force.

“I think the fact that it had to be put together in two weeks ... added tremendously to the pressure and logistics, the demands. But I think the officers have worked around the clock, we are quietly confident that they have put in place the preparations,” he said.

Singapore is not new to hosting high-profile events, including International Monetary Fund and World Bank Group meetings, and the Association of South-East Asian Nations summits in 2007 and 2018.

Gurkhas, whose name derives from the Nepalese hill town of Gorkha, have been deployed in major conflicts and wars since becoming part of the British army in the 19th century. More than 200,000 Gurkhas fought in the two world wars, where they won admiration for their combat skills and bravery, living up to their traditional motto “It’s better to die than to be a coward.”

Gurkhas also fought in the Falklands conflict, the Gulf War, Bosnia, Kosovo and Afghanistan. The British experienced Gurkhas’ fierceness first-hand after suffering heavy losses during their invasion of Nepal. A peace deal signed by the British East India Company in 1815 allowed Britain to recruit troops from Nepal.

After independence in 1947, Britain, Nepal and India reached an agreement to transfer four Gurkha regiments to the Indian army. Former British colonies Singapore and Malaysia have also employed Gurkhas for their police and army, respectively. In Nepal, getting picked to serve as Gurkha soldiers and officers overseas is seen as a ticket out of poverty.

According to Nepal’s Gurkha Army Ex-Servicemen Organisation, over 10,000 applicants try out every year for about 260 places in the British army’s Gurkha units. Many train for months for the selection process, which includes a gruelling “doko” race, which involves carrying 25 kg (55 pounds) of sand while running a steep 4.2-km (2.6-mile) uphill course.

Along with their modern weapons, Gurkhas still carry the traditional “kukri,” a long curved knife which tradition says must “ragat khaikana” — taste blood — once it is drawn. “That is no longer the current practice ... mostly,”

Sara Khan Gets NAKED in a Bathtub

Sara Khan Gets NAKED in a Bathtub; Deletes Video on Instagram Later - See Pic
Add caption

TV actress Sara Khan is currently in Sri Lanka vacationing with her sister Arya Khan. Her sister shared a video of Sara being naked in a bathtub as her Insta story which soon went viral on social media. However, she deleted the video within some time.

Maybe it was Instagram who asked them to take down the video because the content is objectionable as far as the guidelines of the social media platform are concerned. Or maybe it was Sara herself who must've asked her sister to pull down the video. However, some people on the internet have managed to get photos of Sara Khan being nude in the bathtub. We don't know after Mandana Karimi's naked pics if Sara's pics too will go viral on the internet.

Sara Khan shot to fame when she featured in TV shows like Bigg Boss and Sapna Babul Ka...Bidaai. People still remember her for getting married to Ali Merchant on Bigg Boss 4 in 2010. Some of them assumed that it was all farce and Sara and Ali were being paid a hefty sum for getting married on the show. Whatever that was, Sara got the required mileage and the show got its TRPs. Coming back to Sara's naked bathtub pictures, what's your take on them?ak

Visakhapatnam railway station launches all-women railway security squad Subhadra Vahini

HYDERABAD: Adapting Indian Railways motto of safety first, Visakhapatnam railway station of Waltair Division, East Coast Railway, has launched a unique all-female group of railway personnel. Named Subhadra Vahini, this special team of 32 women security personnel will assist lady passengers in case of any eventualities and neccessities.

To get in touch with Subhadra Vahini, women can dial on the toll-free number 182 or connect on it's Facebook and Twitter profiles.

Subhadra Vahini reportedly has 32 railway personnel – 16 from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and 16 from Railway Commercial Department. and an equal number from the commercial wing of the division. The initiative is a joint venture by the Railway Protection Force and Railway Commercial Department.

Indian Railways has been taking several measures to strengthen security of women passengers in trains.

Last month, the North Eastern Railway (NER) decided to install 'panic buttons' in coaches and deploy women police personnel on trains during night hours. The 'panic buttons' in coaches would be directly linked with the train's guard coach.

This year, Indian Railways is focussing on "women and child safety". Special plans of deploying women police personnel in sub-urban trains during night hours besides recruitment of women have been in the pipeline.

Asserting that safety is paramount, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal on Monday said that the massive work undertaken for maintenance of tracks was causing train delays.

"Safety of passengers is paramount for us," he told the media at a press conference here while highlighting the achievements of the Railway Ministry in the last four years.

Add caption

Rainy weekend ahead for Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka: Mumbai residents advised to stay indoors

Several parts across the west coast of India can expect heavy spells of shower in the coming weekend as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted an increase in the rainfall activity over coastal Karnataka, Goa and south Maharashtra till 10 June. Mumbai, along with Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts in Maharashtra, is expected to receive rainfall at most places on Saturday, according to the IMD. Extremely heavy rainfall (above 204.5 millimetre) is expected at isolated places in these areas, but the intensity is likely to decrease on Sunday

The official date of arrival for monsoon in Mumbai is 10 June. Quoting an official, The Times of India reported that there are chances of strong winds which may cause trees to uproot and fall in the city

Fishermen have been advised to not venture into east central Arabian Sea off Konkan and Goa coasts as well as west central and adjoining southwest Arabian Sea off Somalia coast during till 12 June.

"Squally winds speed reaching 40 to 50 kilometre per hour gusting to 60 kilometre per hour is very likely along and off Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra coasts and also over north Bay of Bengal. Sea condition is likely to be rough to very rough over east central, west central and southwest Arabian Sea and north Bay of Bengal," the IMD said in its weather bulletin for Friday.

South Konkan, Goa and coastal Karnataka are likely to receive "heavy to very heavy rain", with extremely heavy rain "very likely" at isolated places on Friday. "Heavy to very heavy rain" is also very likely at isolated places over central Maharashtra and north interior Karnataka; heavy rain at isolated places over sub-Himalayan range, West Bengal, Sikkim, Odisha, Marathwada, Telangana, south interior Karnataka, and Kerala.

Thunderstorm accompanied with gusty winds and lightning is very likely at isolated places over Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Rayalaseema region and Tamilnadu on Friday. Heat wave conditions are very likely at one or two pockets over Rajasthan

The Meteorological department in Kolkata said a low pressure being formed in the Bay of Bengal will advance the Southwest Monsoon in West Bengal and Odisha from SaturdaakThe low pressure is likely to intensify into a depression by Saturday and move north-northwestwards across West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts, the Met department said.

Meanwhile, the Met office in Delhi predicted a possibility of thundery developments on Thursday night and early Friday morning. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover around 40° Celsius and 30° Celsius respectively.

Seven people have died in Rajasthan since Tuesday in rain-related incidents. Of the seven, three died when a portion of their house collapsed due to strong wind and rain on Tuesday evening. Others were struck by lightning,

The Southwest Monsoon is currently active over Kerala with heavy rains lashing the southern state. Widespread rainfall is likely to continue in the state during the next five days, K Santosh, in-charge of India Meteorological Department, Thiruvananthapuram, had told PTI on Thursday.

Mumbai prepares to face heavy rains Mumbai received its first heavy rainfall of this monsoon on Thursday as the Mumbai civic body is preparing itself to tackle monsoon-related incidents such as water logging. Leaves of all the senior officials, including deputy municipal commissioners, have been cancelled and they have been asked to be available in their headquarters on Saturday and Sunday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said. The regional meteorological centre in Mumbai advised the people to abstain from outdoor activities as much as possible during the period. In a statement, the BMC said three teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) will be stationed at Parel, Mankhurd (for eastern suburbs) and Andheri Sports Complex (for western suburbs). Navy personnel will also be deployed in Colaba, Worli, Ghatkopar, Trombay and Malad for flood rescue if required.

Another Rajiv Gandhi-type incident': Maoist letter exposes plan to kill PM Modi

NEW DELHI: The Pune Police have intercepted an internal communication of the Maoists, which talks about the ultra planning to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the manner of a 'Rajiv Gandhi-type incident'

The letter was allegedly found in the house of one of the five persons arrested for "links" with the banned CPI (Maoist), the Pune Police told the court on Thursday.

A day earlier, the police arrested Dalit activist Sudhir Dhawale, lawyer Surendra Gadling, activists Mahesh Raut and Shoma Sen and Rona Wilson from Mumbai, Nagpur and Delhi respectively in connection with 'Elgar Parishad' held here in December and the subsequent Bhima-Koregaon violence in the district, according to PTI.

All five were produced before the sessions court which remanded them in police custody till June 14. The lawyers of the accused said the documents cited by the prosecution were fabricated and the accused had been framed

The letter found in Rona Wilson's house in Delhi refers to the requirement of Rs 8 crore to procure M-4 rifle and four lakh rounds, and also mentions"another Rajiv Gandhi-type incident".

"We are thinking along the lines of another Rajiv Gandhi-type incident," the letter says

"It sounds suicidal and there is a good chance we might fail but we feel the party must deliberate over our proposal," it goes on to state

The letter even mentions how this plan can be achieved. "Targeting his road shows could be an effective strategy," it says

The letter refers to "Modi-led Hindu fascist regime is bulldozing its way into the lives of indigenous adivasis."

"Inspite of big defeats like Bihar and West Bengal, Modi has established a BJP government in more than 15 states," it adds

But not everyone is convinced the letter was authentic. Sanjay Nirupam of the Congress felt the letter may have been planted. "I am not saying this is completely untrue but It has been PM Modi's old tactic, since he was PM, whenever his popularity declines, news of an assassination plot it planted, he said

Austria to expel 'several' imams, shut 7 mosques

VIENNA: Austria will expel "several" foreign-funded imams and shut seven mosques in a crackdown on "political Islam", Chancellor Sebastian Kurz announced on Friday. Kurz said the moves came after an investigation by the religious affairs authority into images which emerged in April of children in Turkish-backed mosques playing dead and reenacting the World War I battle of Gallipoli.

"Parallel societies, political Islam and radicalisation have no place in our country," Kurz said

The photos, published by the Falter weekly, showed the young boys in camouflage uniforms marching, saluting, waving Turkish flags and then playing dead.

Their "corpses" were then lined up and draped in the flags.

The mosque in question was run by the Turkish-Islamic Cultural Associations (ATIB) organisation, based in the German city of Cologne, and a branch of Turkey's religious affairs agency Diyanet. a

ATIB itself condemned the photos at the time, calling the "highly regrettable" event and said that "called off before it had even ended".

Did you know Priyanka Chopra got a marriage proposal from Gerard Butler

Globetrotter Priyanka Chopra seems to be the most eligible single woman of late. From her being on every celebrity chat show to her latest rumoured romance with Nick Jonas, the ‘Quantico’ star has been grabbing the news almost everyday.

While her ardent fans are eagerly waiting for their favourite ‘desi girl’ to come clean about her relationship, recently there was a news report which left everyone shocked. A few years back, in 2009, to be specific, Hollywood heartthrob Gerard Butler who has made every woman go weak in the knees had asked PeeCee out.

Apparently, he came down to India, and Priyanka hosted a party in honour of him at her Versova residence. Through the course of the evening, the smitten Gerard tried his best to woo her, but to no avail. A guest at the party revealed, "Of course the party was for Gerard who was completely besotted by Priyanka and kept proposing to her every half hour. It's become a standing joke rather a 'kneeling' joke between them. 'Will you marry me?' he knelt and said every half hour while she would burst into laughter. She's clearly not interested on being Mrs Butler.”

Even in 2012, the ‘300’ actor joked about his broken heart and had said that he is still single as he is still waiting for Priyanka Chopra

SBI chief Rajnish Kumar says bank already big, more mergers are not advisable

STATE BANK of India (SBI) chairman Rajnish Kumar has raised the red flag from a “systemic risk point of view” on further mergers by India’s largest bank, which already has “over 20 per cent market share”.

Kumar said: “SBI has already become big. My view is that from a systemic risk point of view, it won’t be advisable that SBI grows through merger or acquisition. Our normal growth and maintaining of market share is a different matter. You can’t have a banking institution, which already has over 20 per cent market share (go for more mergers)… from the risk management perspective also, it’s not good.” In April last year, the Bharatiya Mahila Bank was merged with SBI in line with the decision of the government, the dominant shareholder, to ensure greater banking services outreach to a larger number of women at a faster pace. Earlier, SBI’s associate banks had merged with the parent bank leading to the creation of a local banking behemoth with assets of over Rs 37 lakh crore and over 22,000 branches.

The SBI chief’s comments come against the backdrop of statements by senior government officials, regulators and others on the need for consolidation in India’s banking sector, especially with nearly a dozen state-owned banks placed under the Prompt Corrective Action framework with restrictions on lending, deposit mobilisation and borrowing. In the past, too, many mergers in the banking sector have been forced ones. The SBI is seen as a candidate given its size and strength to take over any troubled banks if its principal shareholder does have its way down the line. Kumar, who took over as SBI chairman last October, said what needs to be deliberated is whether the country needs 21 public sector banks
